Why Is the Dread of Change Always Equated With Bigotry?

Reading Andrew Sullivan is always a trip, but he falls into leading his readers into a self-loathing trap should they be predisposed to doing so. Can't wanting the neighbor's babies to resemble me physically, spiritually and culturally be considered just a natural and desirable extension of wanting my progeny to be along the same lines?
